What is Paro Tshechu?

Paro Tshechu (Tshechu means 'day ten' in Dzongkha) is Bhutan's most famous and largest festival, held annually for 5 days in the 2nd or 3rd month of the Bhutanese lunar calendar (typically late March to early April in the Gregorian calendar). Tshechus commemorate the activities of Guru Padmasambhava and are considered religious events where attending grants blessings and good merit.

Programme: Cham Sacred Masked Dances

The Cham dances are performed by monks in elaborate costumes and masks representing deities, demons, and historical figures. Key dances include: Tungam (Dance of the Lords of Cremation Grounds), Pacham (Dance of Heroes), Dranyeo Cham (Dance with Instruments), Sha Chi Cham (Dance of the Stag and Hound), Raksha Mangcham (Dance of the Judgment of the Dead).

The Giant Thongdrel Unfurling

The highlight of Paro Tshechu is the pre-dawn unfurling of the giant thongdrel (appliqué silk tapestry) on the final morning. Hundreds of metres wide, the thongdrel depicts Guru Rinpoche and is said to grant liberation to all who see it. Devotees come from across Bhutan and cry with devotion at the viewing.

Best Viewing Locations & Photography

Rinpung Dzong courtyard: central performance venue. The upper galleries of the dzong offer elevated view of the dance ground. Arrive 1–2 hours early to secure a good spot. Photography is permitted during most dances. Be respectful during religious rituals — no zoom lenses directly in monks' faces.
